french interior and product designer andrée putman died a few days ago aged 87. she was credited with inventing the concept of 'boutique hotel' with her game-changing interior design of the morgan's hotel on new york's madison avenue in 1984. she put on her stamp on hotels in germany, france, japan and hongkong, where luxury skyscraper apartment-hotel 'the putman'was named after her.

my greatest culinary hero and widely admired cookbook writer claudia roden receives dutch award 'johannes van damprijs' for all her works. she is best known for her classic works on middle eastern and mediterranean cookery and her award winning magnum opus 'the book of jewish food'. she recently published her newest book 'the food of spain' that immediately became 'the sunday times cookbook of the year 2012'.  she is not just a fantastic cook, she is also a great writer. she writes as a culinary anthropologist, always includes ethnography and history of the kitchen and table, she traces the origin of each recipe and tells background stories of the food.  i've had her 'book of middle eastern food' on my bedside table for years, every night i read one story or recipe before i go to sleep....

'see the world beautiful', stunning photography by renowned fashion photographeranne menke who has traveled the world to shoot fashion stories for magazines like vogue, elle, harper's bazar and marie claire. after realizing that the exotic locations she was scouting were teeming with inspiration,   often in form of the people and places who seemed to inspire high fashion in ways undocumented, she took her commercial skills into a more personal realm, shooting people from the deserts of africa to the hills of asia and the frozen landscapes of north africa.
